Things to Consider When Choosing a Removalist

PUBLISHED by AB Removals - 26 Apr, 2016

choosing a removalistHiring an experienced and professional removalist company will help make your moving day hiccup free. When choosing your movers, it’s important to consider the following factors to make sure you get it right.

Get numerous quotes

With any purchase, you want the price to match the quality of the product/service. Getting a single quote and running with it isn’t always the best idea. Sourcing a variety of obligation free quotes from different reputable removalists gives you some room for comparison, and may mean you save potentially hundreds of dollars during your move.

Call or email a few removalists, and request an obligation-free written quote. Make sure you consider and outline moving price, service and any extras such as packing, materials and storage. When reviewing your quotes don’t necessarily go straight for the cheapest option. Consider experience, reputation and resources as being equally important.

Recommendations and reviews

It’s always a good idea to consider previous customer experience with a moving company. Try talking to friends and family who have had a good experience using a moving company and narrow down your list using their recommendations. Being aware of a company’s performance with customers is a great way to reassure you of their service and take some of the guesswork out of the decision making process.

Plan ahead

Moving can be a stressful experience, so it’s important to plan ahead and give yourself enough time to get everything done properly. Give yourself plenty of time before your move to gather removalist quotes and choose and schedule a removalist company. Make sure your chosen movers are equally as prepared as you are, by providing them with details such as access points, home layouts and stairs. Keep in mind that these factors may also effect pricing.

Read the fine print

Make sure you understand the processes and pricing of your chosen movers. The last thing you want to deal with is unexpected charges and fees after a big move, so make sure you take the time to review any terms and conditions, making sure they are clear and satisfactory. Also go over your quote and make sure all of the necessary costs have been covered.

Levels of insurance will vary from company to company, so it’s important to check what is covered with your chosen movers. The most common area of concern is the loss or damage of property, so ensure that something is in place for this. If you have an existing contents insurance policy, it may be a good idea to check if your belongings are covered while in transit. If not, ask your movers if they have arranged any cargo insurance.

  1. I have a friend that has started to move out of his old apartment. I think it’s a great idea to plan ahead to minimize as much stress as you can. When we moved out, we had no planning done and we really paid for it. Great article.

Always better to plan ahead and look for potential issues Gregory. Hope you didn’t pay too much :)) Anyway, as long as you learned from the experience it’s probably all for the best.
      Thank you for your comment.

Thank you for the help. My wife and I will be moving soon and are going to need the help of a removalist service. I definitely want to get a quote first, as you mentioned. Would you recommend getting multiple quotes to compare?

    • AB Removals says:

      Hi Justin,

We always recommend getting more than one quote in order to have more than one opinion, that of course unless you are moving with us or already dealt with the removals company in the past.
Please feel free to contact us and we will be more than happy to assist with the move or even to give tips should you decide to move with other company.
      Thank you for your comment.

It makes sense that you would want to consider previous customer experience when choosing a removalist company. That way, you can look at reviews and see how the company performed. Also, you might be able to get some questions answered that you might have in the process.

  5. I have never hired help with moving before, so all of your advice is really helpful. My husband and I have accumulated a lot of furniture over the years, and there is no way we can move on our own this time around. Planning ahead and making sure you have plenty of time is good advice. I don’t want to procrastinate my packing, especially if we need to hire removalists.

  6. We will be changing homes soon. Both my husband and I are very busy, and I think a removalist company would really help us to make the moving experience less stressful. As you suggested, we will be sure to look at recommendations and reviews. Thanks for sharing!!

  7. When we appoint any company for moving, it’s our responsibility to check their background first. I am glad you share this with us.

I think the suggestion to plan ahead and give yourself enough time to gather quotes and schedule a removalist is really helpful. My wife and I are moving later this year, so how early in advance would you suggest we start looking for a good company to move our belongings? I don’t want to be scrambling at the last minute looking for a removal service, so any further tips would be great. Thanks!

      Hi John,

Thank you for your comment, if you have a relatively big move (3 bedrooms or more) and you are not flexible with the date of the move, then probably start contacting companies at least 4-6 weeks prior to your move, this will give you enough time to gather quotes and choose carefully. Most companies are not booked out a month in advance.
If your move is smaller and you are flexible within a range of few days, then a couple of weeks will be enough.
Don’t forget to read reviews on any service provider you are about to hire as this is the most genuine source of information on a company.
Please feel free to contact us directly if you are interested in our services or use this advice free of charge :))

Thank you for guiding us regarding the removal through this wonderful blog post. Recently I took the help of a removal company in Perth, Fremantle Mover to relocate my home. I keep your tips in my mind for the next times, if I want to relocate my home again.
